Teromance Chapter 07: Scherzo for the Unbound Horizon

Feeling the mental weight of recent, high-stakes events (remember that bloody ICU room?), Dianna wakes to an empty bed and a sudden spike of panic. But a breath later, the rich aroma of special pancakes brings her back to earth. Terry has planned a surprise, and they’re beating the crowds.

Their destination: the city zoo. This massive sanctuary of wrought iron and oak leaves, meant for education and wildlife admiration, immediately triggers Dianna’s dryad senses. “I can feel the distress of children in captivity throughout this entire place,” she winces, viewing every living beast through the unyielding gravity of the deep green.

What follows is an extraordinary date through distinct animal habitats, seen through the unique lens of a human soldier and his Fae-linked wife:

  • Tropical Rainforest: High-energy capuchin monkeys, far from grieving, engage in rapid-fire chatter (bragging about free fruit and jaguar-free living). But when a lost digital camera becomes a precision-missile, a certain shadowed figure in a trench coat finds herself in the line of fire.

  • Reptile House: The cool, dim terrariums house massive pythons issuing highly specific, aristocratic complaints about their dinner service. To Terry’s bewilderment, the snakes engage in a rhythmic, multi-toned chant that sounds uncannily like a sports crowd demanding quality lean meat.

  • African Savanna: Old Dan, the massive male lion, bolsters Terry’s covenant strength, allowing him to experience the big cat’s raspy, dry-humored matriarch in real-time. But a deep, territorial roar indicates that a specific intruder scent has not gone unnoticed.

  • Mighty Bruno: In the outdoor amphitheater, Bruno the six-ton elephant engages a dozen children in a staged spectacle. When the energetic mascot calls for adult volunteers, Terry and Dianna step up to anchor the rope.

Throughout the afternoon, as Dianna’s botanical aura pulses, making wrought iron bloom into living emerald velvet, Terry finds his military threat sweep narrowed down to a four-foot perimeter, entirely hyper-focused on her radiant joy.

But as the sun tilts into a long, warm amber, it becomes clear that they aren't the only ones enjoying the show. The universe, it seems, has long been making its own wagers, and the animals of this sanctuary are more than happy to help collect.
